For many families, this time of year represents something special. It’s a season of giving, sharing food and good times with family and friends, and creating new and lasting memories. Whether that celebration takes place around the Menorah, the Christmas tree or a treasured family heirloom that represents your faith tradition, it’s the time with family that matters most! Today, Home Dream Designs is sharing news about what has become one of our annual traditions – the Celebration of Trees that takes place each year as part of the “Flato Home for the Holidays Gala” supporting Caledon Community Services.
Trees now decorate many homes for the holiday season, regardless of your faith tradition. They are such a pretty sight to see and for all to enjoy. I was thrilled when I was asked to decorate a tree for the Celebration of Trees. In the spirit of giving, a number of local artisans and designers donate their time to create a themed Christmas tree, decorating it and placing the tree up for auction. My theme for this year was “Baby its cold outside!” The tree colours are primarily rose-gold and the tree itself sported a fabulous “fur” stole! I always have so much fun and the experience is made all the more memorable as most often the trees are donated, by the winning bidder, to other charitable organizations such as Family Transition Place in Orangeville. I have come to regard this as a special part of my Christmas, unleashing my creative side and knowing the tree will find a good home when the party is over. With all proceeds going to support Caledon Community Services, helping people in the community in which I live, getting into the spirit of giving has never been easier.
Speaking of spirit, here are a few fun facts about just how long the “spirit” of Christmas has been represented by a tree. It turns out that for literally thousands of years trees have figured prominently in celebrations. “The evergreen fir tree has traditionally been used to celebrate winter festivals (pagan and Christian) for thousands of years” As well, the Romans used them to decorate temples during Saturnalia and Christians viewed the fir as a sign of everlasting life. (1) The first actual use of the evergreen as a Christmas tree is traditionally thought to be associated with having roots in Germany. According to some historians, Martin Luther is attributed as the first to put candles on the tree to light it. Other historical traditions put Latvia at the centre of the first use of the fir as a Christmas tree. Finally, according to Wikipedia a decisive factor in the tree “winning general popularity was the German army’s decision to place Christmas trees in its barracks and military hospitals during the Franco-Prussian War.” Then, at the start of the 20th century, Christmas trees began to appear inside churches. (2) Members of the British monarchy (notably Queen Victoria) had Christmas trees and now here we are today most of us not able to imagine a Christmas without a tree.
