By the time you read this, time will have “marched” forward, officially announcing that Spring is almost upon us. It’s been a long winter and even though we gave you plenty of cozy ideas to survive the winter (like how to implement hygge into your lifestyle and living space) the truth is we’ve all just been in survival mode as we await the coming of better weather. In celebration of spring’s imminent arrival – today I want to talk about sprucing up your space, living clutter-free and creating the space in your home to live your life fully.

Oh, and I’m also inviting you to come and see me as I’ll be appearing at two home shows this spring and I would love for you to drop by! Come out and say hi, if you are looking for some local tradespeople or vendors. It’s a great way to access local community resources by attending the show. Oh, there will be free giveaways too!!!

April 20,21, 22 – Caledon Spring Home Show

There really is no better time than spring to get organized.  Just cleaning out your mudroom or entry way is sure to make you feel better. Salt, sand, stained boots and clearing out the heavy winter coats, perhaps sending them off to the cleaners so they can be packed away clean, will help freshen up your space and give you room to breathe. Consider treating yourself to a new rug or runner in the area. Something that is lighter, brighter and not covered in residual salt stains. There are plenty of inexpensive options available if you shop carefully.  While you’re packing up the winter clutter also consider what you didn’t wear. As a general rule of thumb if you made it through an entire season without donning that lovely “must-have” matching heavy winter scarf and hat or you’re still holding onto a ski jacket but haven’t skied in 10 years, it’s time to make a trip to your local donation center.

Moving on into your home I want you to collect all the heavy blankets, pillows and throws and put them into storage. We’ve talked about storage systems before and I hope you’ve got your clearly labeled, stackable containers ready to go. “Winter” décor needs to go and time to break out the box labeled “Spring.” Lighten up your space with brighter colours, floral patterned prints on pillows and embrace this season’s still “on trend” use of mixed metals. Like your mudroom, this is also a time to edit. Before you pack things away again ask yourself, Marie Kondo style, “is this something I still love (or need?) Check items for small rips, tears or stains and if they aren’t in great condition – then it’s time to give them the old heave ho! Even older blankets and throws that are still somewhat serviceable can find a new home by donating them to your local animal shelter.

Get a head start on household maintenance chores like washing windows. I don’t know about you but the first thing I want to do in spring is air out the house, cleaning out the bad winter fug. Why not clean the windows as you do. It’s a great excuse to allow that beautiful spring sun to shine throughout your home.

Finally – let’s talk closets. You’re changing over to your spring wardrobe anyway so purge, purge, purge. Be ruthless. If you haven’t worn an item for a full rotation of seasons, (in other words, even last spring it never saw the light of day and it’s been in your closet through summer, fall and winter) it’s time to go. Closets are not for storage, and shouldn’t be so cluttered that it’s a battle to choose your clothing each day. They are simply a space for hanging pieces that you love, that you can’t wait to put on again or that bring a smile to your face as you wear them. If everything is so tightly packed together that you can’t even find that special piece, you need to purge.

After a good housecleaning and all this hard work, take a walk through your home with a fresh perspective. Are there any items that still stand out or areas that still feel cluttered? The beauty of spring and the sun shining through those clean windows is that it shines a light on what needs to stay and what needs to go. Excess tchotchkes cluttering up your counter or shelves simply gather dust and with all that sun, the dust is more visible. Time to edit here too. Think clean lines, less clutter and your spring “spruce up” will be complete! Oh – and about that invitation – come and visit me at one of two homes shows where I will be appearing this spring: Details for both Home Shows can be found in the links above. Can’t wait to meet you!
